Odds are it's because you bought a Radio Shack unit that only does 1a at 12v. You merely need a slightly more powerful one. Any adapter will do as long as it meets the spec. The one you're using just doesn't meet the spec. The full specification is here. You should be able to find one that meets your needs once you've got all that information.
