Like I said, it's a huge pain. In this situation, you could slice the image into a main center square section, some smaller "outer" squares (those that fall outside the center square section), and the border pixels.

In my opinion, having a square hotspot is not the end of the world and transforming it into a circular hotspot is definitely not worth the hassle.
